About JazzErieJAZZ IN ERIE
Dave Van Amburg & Friends, Colony Club House Band
Two regularly scheduled jazz groups each week on Erie's west side:
This assemblage is full of surprises, with Dave's guitar and vocals leading the way. Jazz, blues, pop, Latin, a little groove, a lot of oldies but goodies. Cohorts on a given evening may include Phil Popotnik, Dave Blaetz, Carl Hultman, Stan Bialomizy, Paul Sontheimer, and many others who are scheduled for the evening or just drop by and sit in. Great menu, no cover charge, friendly surroundings.
Three premier jazz regulars hold forth each week at this venerable venue which has been presenting great live jazz for as long as must of us can remember. Pianist Howard Hamme, the go-to accompanist for singers and other musicians across the region, has great jazz chops and knowledge to boot. With a trio of equals: Carl Alanakian, a drummer who achieved fame in his native Armenia and Russia at a young man, before emigrating to Erie where he has polished his craft, with rock-solid time and enduring creativity, and Harry Jacobson - the dean of Erie's jazz bassists, whose propulsive time and sophisticated harmonic sensibilities add depth to the endeavor. Lots going on in this unassuming group.
Dave Callaghan at Wegman's Cafeteria, Fri.. May 27, June 10, July 8. 6 - 9 p.m. Peach St. store. Saxophonist Callaghan, guitarist Joe Frisina, drummer Tim Driscoll and bassist Dick Thompson join forces for jazz, standards, Latin, jazz/pop. Watch our Events Calender for additional jazz performances. October 4, 2015
