Saturday, Feb. 13, 7:00 p.m. at the Avalon Hotel, Room 210. " Exploring the Border 2" will present words and music by three poets -- Chuck Joy, Monica Igras and Kim Noyes, and three musicians -- saxophonist Mikel Prester, percussionist Nick "Tito" Ronzitti, and bassist Dick Thompson Some poems by themselves, some with music intertwined in various combinations, some music alone. Some new material, some old, all original. Suggested donation $10.
Mon., Feb. 15 --There will be a special Mid-Day Art Break from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. featuring the jazz gurus, Ethnic Heritage Ensamble.
Comprised of internationally renowned percussionist Kahil El’ Zabar with Hamiet Bluiett and Craig Harris; the trio seamlessly combines the ancient rhythms of the past with new frontiers of improvisation. A fanfare of colors, sounds and rhythmical hipness, a performance by the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble is a celebration of deep jazz.
Admission is free, with donations encouraged.
Two February Market House Jam Sessions in Meadville. The first, on Sunday, Feb. 7 from 2:00 -- 6:00 p.m. is part of the MCA Mardi Gras celebration, on the third day of that festival. As with other Meadville Jazz Jams, all jazz players are invited to bring their instruments and participate. Drums and piano will be available. the sessions take place in the second floor performance of the Market House, at 910 Market St. in Meadville.

Jazz every Thursday evening at the Colony Pub & Grille, 2670 W. 8th St., 6:30 -- 9:30 p.m. The Colony House Band, a piano trio with pianist Howard Hamme, a first call accompanist and jazz notable in Erie, drummer Carl Alanakian, whose disciplined, elegant chops and rock-solid time set a solid` foundation for the band, along with premier area upright bassist Harry Jacobson. Strong skills, great knowledge, great swing. No cover charge.
Another regular contributor to the jazz scene in Erie is guitarist and singer Dave VanAmburg, whose band Dave Van Amburg & Friends holds forth every Thursday evening from 6:00 -- 9:00 p.m. at Maxi's Restaurant, in the Bel Aire Clarion hotel,
Driven by VanAmburg's propulsive rhythms, the band offers a menu of blues, pop, Latin, jazz and more, and a variety of special guest musicians and others who drop by just to play a few tunes. No cover charge.
Fri., Feb. 12 will bring the Dave Callaghan Quartet to Wegman's Cafeteria on upper Peach St., 6:00 -- 9:00 p.m. A hard bop enthusiast, saxophonist Callaghan will play a variety of jazz, Latin and pop/jazz standards with compatriots Joe Frisina -- gujitar, Tim Driscoll -- drums, and dick Thompson -- bass..
