JazzErie Discussion Group

The JazzErie Listening/Discussion Group meets on the third Thursday of each month to share recorded jazz, music news and ideas.  Our stereo system can accomodate CD's and LP's.  Saxophonist Charles Ventrello serves as moderator; trombonist Dennis Kitchen as creative technology guy.

The group had its beginnings during a four session class at Gannon University, sponsored by JazzErie and titled "The Art and Craft of Jazz."  Sentiments at the completion of these sessions were "to keep this thing going" in some fashion.

Thus, we have been meeting for fifteen years since May of 1998.  For several years we met at station WQLN and more recently we are hosted by the Erie Art Museum.

We pride ourselves on being very democratic: no officers, no dues, no by-laws and no roll call.  Just a moderator and a group of people who love the music, would like to learn more about it, stay abreast of developments, share insights, or simply to enjoy the music and banter.  To paraphrase Tom Hanks's line from the movie Forrest Gump, "Jazz (life) is like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you're going to get."

We meet at 7:30 p.m. until around 9:00 p.m.  Reminders appear in the Erie Times-News Showcase section.  Information: Charles Ventrello at 814/866-2731.

A sample report from Ventrello summarizing a meeting held some time ago gives a flavor of the group's proceedings:

A previous engagement prevented me from attending most of this meeting.  So I’ll omit the editorializing and for the record simply report who contributed what, the artist and the selection.

Sketches of Spain, Miles Davis and Bill EvansThanks to Denny Kitchen and the attendees for being there and helping with set-up and break-down.

Don Swift – “Sketches of Spain,” the memorable collaboration of Miles Davis and Gil Evans, “Saeta.”

Dick Thompson – Dave Brubeck Quartet with Jimmy Rushing, “I Never Knew.”

Don Schwab – Dave Grusin, “Homage to Duke;” “Satin Doll.”

Jim Metzler – Dick Hyman, solo piano, “Hot Jazz For A Cool Night, A Jazz Christmas,”  “White Christmas.”

Al Lubiejewski – Houston Person, “So Nice,” “Blues Everywhere.”

Denny Kitchen – Kenny Barron and John Hicks, “Sun Shower,” Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning.”
