SUMMER JAZZ FESTIVALS -- PITTSBURGH & CLEVELAND

There are some great names and great bands in the lineup -- drummer Ginger Baker  Joey ,DeFrancesco, Bebel Gilberto . bassist Christian McBride Trio, and others,

Dates and times of all events, along with prices, are now posted on the Festical's website: www.pittsburghjazzlive.com.

Some tickets are still available for a preliminary event: a concert with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on June 16 at Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave., at 8 p.m., featuring Ramsey Lewis, singer Kurt Elling and trumpeter.Sean Jones.  Tickets range from $25 to $80.
 
The Festical itself is listed as being from June 19 through June 21, Most artists appear at various venues on the 20th. to be scheduled on the 20th, except for the Average White Band on the 21st.  

Ginger Baker on drums Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion Band will appear at the Byham Theater, 101 Sixth St. tickets are $40.

All events are held in three theaters on the east side of downtown Cleveland.  Events are scheduled so as not to overlap.  Prices range from $25 - $65 per concert.

John ClaytonThurs., July 9, 7:30 p.m. The Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, featuring the vocal group Take Six, and trumpeter Dominick Farinacci.
Connor Palace Theater, Playhouse Square, 1615 Euclid Ave.  Tickets $65-55-40.

John Clayton, bassist and arranger, began his career touring with Monty Alexander,  then the Count Basie Orchestra. His skills as an arranger brought him into work with Diana Krall, Whitney Houston, Milt Jackson Carmen McRae Quincy Jones and many others.  He and drummer Jeff Hamilton assembled a big band which has toured and recorded now for a number of years.

The male vocal group Take Six has won 10 Grammys. 'Nuf said. Gospel, jazz, R&B, pop.

Dominick Farinacci, who appeared in Erie a few years ago, is a Julliard grad and a Wynton Marsalis protoge with a big following in Japan and Dubai, serving as a "jazz ambassador" for the Lincoln Center jazz program.

Fri., July 10, 5:30 p.m.  Celebration of Robert Lockwood, Jr.
Ohio Theater, 1511 Euclid Ave.  Tickets $32 & $25.

Born in Arkansas, Lockwood learned undeer the guidance of blues legend Robert Johnson.  His raw, searing guitar and vocals have earned him worldwide fame.

Fri., July 10, 7 p.m.  Smooth Jazz Double Bill: Brian Culbertson & Brian Simpson.
Ohio Theater.  Tickets $65-55-40.

Pianist Culbertson, with 16 albums to his credit, has played with an array of notables, from Earth, Wind & Fire to Barry Manilow.  Joining him are another pianist, Simpson, and vocalist Maysa, saxophonists Enge Groove and Kim Waters, and Peter White.

Fri., July 10, 9:45 p.m.  "Creole Joe," with C.J. Chenier, Nick Sample, Ray Parker, Jr. and others.  Cajun music from an 8-piece band originating in Houston, TX

Sat., July 11, 2:30 p.m.  Cyrille Aimee & Wycliffe Gordon double feature.  SingerAimee brings her own Brazilian/Gypsy bandmates. Trombonist Gordon brings his International All-Stars: Yasushi Nakamara - bass, Alvin Atkinson - drums, Ehud Asherie - piano.
