Summer's over and the weather is cooling, but jazz in Cleveland is beginning to heat up again.
First, two concerts in downtown venues:
Thurs., Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. John Pizarelli (guitar/vocals). One of the premier vocal entertainers in the business today, with special guest Luca Mundaca (also guitar/vocals). $45. The Music Box Supper Club, 1148 Main Ave. (in the Flats). For details go to www.musicbox.com.
Sat., Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Bassist/singer/composer/heartthrob Espiranza Spaulding, at the Conner Palace Theater, 1615 Euclid Ave. (downtown). Trio with Leo Genovese = keyboards, Lyndon Rochelle - drims. Tickets $55 - $259.

Nighttown , less than two hours from Erie, features excellent jazz nearly every evening. Food is first rate, cover charges generally modest. Parking is metered by the city, so bring some quarters.

Tues., Oct 14 at 7:00 p.m. Helen Sung and her Quartet, with Joshua Jackson - sax, Janire Williams - drums and TRB - bass. This is a young pianist to be reckoned with. Check out the clip below with bassist Ron Carter. Cover $20.
Weds., Oct 15 at 7:00 p.m. Singer Vanessa Rubin, who hails from Cleveland but has gone on to international fame. For a double treat, she is backed by the Helen Sung trio with Peter Dominguez - bass. Cover $20.

Weds., Oct. 29 at 7:00 & 9:00 p.m. Freddy Cole Quartet, with Cole - piano & vocals, Randy Napolean - guitar, Elias Bailey - acoustic bass, TBA - drums. The old master at work. Cover $30.
Sat., Nov. 1 at 8:30 p.m. Alto saxophonist Richie Cole with the Sammy DeLeone Sextet. The bebopper flies again with Sammy DeLeon - timbales & congas, Jackie Warrdn - piano, Nelson Orter - percussion, Joe Miller - trumpet, Dick Ingersoll - saxophones and Chieto Hernandez - bass. Cover $20.
