Coming March 8: Amina Figerova Sextet
JazzErie brings a major new artist to Erie

Amina FigerovaA JAZZERIE EVENT.  Pianist/composer/arranger Amina Figerova will be bringing her Sextet to Erie on Sat., March 8.  The concert will be at the Erie Art Mujseum performance space, 5th St. entrance, at 8:00 p.m.  Suggested donation, $20.   $15 for JazzErie members,  A $10 donation for students and youth can admit a second person free if you bring a friend.

"Figerova joins the swelling ranks of women jazz composers (think Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carla Bley, Maria Schneider).  Her instrument is piano but her heart is the small ensembles she has been leading since 2005."

"Original repertoire, each musician a powerful soloist in his or her own right...among the top echelon of composer/bandleaders."

Amina Figerova Sextet"A major artist."

Latest CD release: "Twelve" (In & Out Records, 2012).

The album’s title reflects its being the twelfth CD she has released as a leader/composer.  Her first album, “Attraction” (Music Media Records, 1994) already showed her distinctive melodic, modern but accessible sound, and included husband and 18-year collaborator, flautist Bart Platteau on the bands roster.  Her following ten records, all released by Munich Records, showed her growing compositional/arranging comfort and creativity.

Based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the ensemble drew from the top ranks of European jazz musicians.  Figerova clearly has the capacity to attract and hold onto very talented musicians, and the group’s sound retains a European flavor

Bio & Accomplishments

Figerova was born and raised in Azerbaijan.  Husband Bart Paltteau is Belgian, and the couple settled in Rotterdam to pursue their musical projects.  They have toured throughout Europe, are fixtures at the Newport Jazz Festival and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest, and have toured major cities in the U.S. as well.  They moved to Queens, NYC in 2011.
