New Ears

Though some school music & arts programs have been cut, many Erie-area student musicians continue to receive training in the always-developing, challenging music called jazz.

Come hear the results!

NEXT GENERATION concerts feature local sThe Misery Bay Big Bandchool jazz ensembles, along with regional professionals. We get to hear what they're       thinking and doing.  This year's bands will include: Ft. LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek and General McLane.

Regional professionals involved this year are baritone sax legend Bruce Johnstone and the Misery Bay Big Band.

The program also features the award of JazzErie's $1,000 scholarship, for a graduating senior to pursue her or his education in music.

John Marszalek and Chuck Lute At the helm

Next Generation leadership is provided by General McLane Band Director John Marszalek, who coordinates and arranges the excellent program and facility, and says "Everybody, students and adult band members, are excited about the show this year."

JazzErie Scholarship

Chuck Lute, former Collegiate Academy band and orchestra director, now an adjunct professor at Edinboro Univeristy, administers the JazzErie Scholarship program.  Chuck emphasizes "There is still time to apply for the 2013 JazzErie Scholarship!  Application deadline is May 15, 2013."

The Scholarship offers $1,000 for a graduating senior to pursue post-High School education in music at an accredited school.  One scholarship is awarded each year.
The Application Form can be found on this website at Jazz News & Notices>JazzEducation.  Contact Chuck Lute at clute2576@verizon.net.

Earlier Generations

In addition to NEXT GENERATION CONCERT exposure, participating high school bands have enjoyed a number of stimulating opportunities to play their music: Last year's General McLane band performed at Cleveland's Tri-C Jazz Fest. A number of bands have played in area malls and open concerts in other venues.

An ambitious dream was fulfilled a few years ago when a "JazzErie All Stars" band composed of area high school musicians performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, first rehearsing their way across France.  They were offered gigs in Europe, but had to come home...

Recent NEXT GENERATION concerts have featured regional musicians Steven Hawk, Bruce Johnstone, the Misery Bay Big Band, and an array of local educators/musicians.

Come join in the fun!
